El Progreso Station

The socio-ecosystems of sustainable tourism

Our station in El Progreso is centered around rural community tourism and environmental projects run by the Corcovado Foundation. Our non-profit hostel in El Progreso, Drake Bay Backpackers was established in 2014 to provide travelers with quality, budget accommodation in the Osa and to generate funds for our conservation programs. Since then, we have won a certificate of excellence on Trip Advisor and a gold rating in their Green Leaders program, as well as raising over $17,000 for our environmental programs. The hostel is a living example of how rural community tourism can provide economic and socio-psychological benefits to the community which in turn gives them a drive to protect the environment that attracts visitors.

El Progreso, not only introduces students to a fascinating biological world, but also gives them the opportunity to observe the connections between conservation and community development.

Students can volunteer in a variety of community projects such as:

The Sea Turtle Conservation Project

The Environmental Education Program

Beach clean ups

Ecotourism development

We make it easy by planning every step of the way!
